Victim killed in Readfield incident identified as Belfast woman; husband charged with murder
READFIELD — A Belfast woman has been identified as the victim of a violent Feb. 19 incident on Giles Road in Readfield, according to a press release from Maine State Police.
Reports of the incident were received Wednesday, Feb. 19, at approximately 10:02 a.m., members of MSP and Winthrop Police Department responded to the scene, on Giles Road.
Following their arrival, troopers located a deceased woman outside of the respective residence. She has now been identified as Margaux Whittemore, 32, of Belfast.
The homeowner, Dorothy Whittemore, 67, was found injured inside the residence, and was transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment. Although her condition was initially listed as critical, it has since been upgraded, according to the release.
The suspected perpetrator, identified as Samuel Whittemore, 43, also of Belfast, reportedly fled the scene by the time troopers arrived, though he was taken into custody a short distance from the residence.
Samuel Whittemore was transported to Maine General Hospital in Augusta for evaluation, and has since been transferred to Kennebec County Jail, where he has been charged with murder.
Margaux and Samuel Whittemore were married and resided in Belfast. At the time of the incident they were visiting the home of Samuel’s parents in Readfield. His father was reportedly outside of the home at the time of the incident, but arrived shortly after.
The deceased was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where an autopsy was performed this morning, Feb. 20.
The manner of death has been ruled a homicide, though the cause of death is not being released at this time.
Samuel Whittemore is expected to make his initial court appearance Feb. 21.
