David R. Hoch, obituary
ROCKLAND — David R. Hoch, 95, died peacefully Sunday, February 16, 2025, at the Sussman Hospice House in Rockport. David maintained his independence at his cherished Masonic Street home until his final days.
Born in Rockland on August 24, 1929, he was the son of Raymond and Ruth Koster Hoch. Educated in Rockland schools, he was a 1947 graduate of Rockland High School.
Following graduation, David attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. Upon returning to Rockland, he experienced a fateful encounter when he met the love of his life, Isabelle Firth, while riding a bus in town. After persuading her to join him for a date, their romance blossomed. The couple planned to marry as soon as David returned from his overseas service in the Army during the Korean War. They were married on July 4, 1954. Shortly thereafter, Isabelle and David purchased their home at Masonic Street, where they built a life together until Isabelle's passing in 2020. Their son, David W. Hoch, and grandson, Samuel, who live nearby, brought immeasurable joy to both David and Isabelle throughout their lives.
David began his distinguished career with the Rockland Lime Company, eventually serving as its final President before the company's closure. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to found R & R Engineering, a successful metal fabrication firm. Later, David joined his brother, Wes, at North End Marine & Fiberglass Engineering. In 1995, following the company’s purchased by Sabre Yachts, David retired from the Rockland location of North End Composites after contributing significantly to the company's growth and success.
Never one to remain idle, David consistently found meaningful ways to keep engaged with life. Long before road running became mainstream, he could be found jogging the scenic routes of Rockport, later continuing this passion through the streets of Rockland well into his seventies. He dedicated countless hours to the Rockland Historical Society, preserving the heritage of the community he loved. When not engaged in community service, David took great pride in maintaining his immaculate yard, a testament to his meticulous nature and appreciation for beauty.
David's warm, friendly personality and genuine interest in others endeared him to all who knew him. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, David is survived by his son, David W. Hoch, and grandson, Samuel Hoch, both of Rockland, as well as numerous friends whose lives he touched.
A celebration of his life will be held Friday, February 28, 2025, at 11 a.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. To share a memory or condolence with the Hoch family, please visit their Book of Memories at www.bchfh.com.
