UPDATE (Feb. 12, 2025, 12:30 p.m.): More information has been released in regards to a motor vehicle crash on the Augusta Road, in Washington, Feb. 9, 2025.

“Due to the complex nature of the incident, which involves a death, the investigation is ongoing at this time,” said Knox County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Patrick Polky. 

However, Polky said that initial scene reports indicate that a 2009 Hyundai Accent, operated by Joshua Theriault-Patten, 37, of Newcastle, crossed the centerline and struck a 2016 Subaru Forrester, operated by Noah McGrath, 27, of Portland.

Emergency responders arrived and found both operators trapped in their vehicles; both were extricated. Both operators were taken to a local hospital for injuries. 

McGrath sustained minor injuries. Theriault-Patten succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.

No additional details will be released until the investigation is completed.

“We would like to acknowledge the collaborative efforts of our partner public safety organizations and thank them for their assistance,” said the KCSO. “These agencies include the Knox Regional Communications Center, Washington Fire Department, Union Rescue, Waldoboro Emergency Medical Services, Maine State Police, LifeFlight of Maine, Knox County District Attorney’s Office, Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Maine Towing, and MaineHealth."

UPDATE: Crash reconstructionists called to Washington Sunday evening

UPDATE (Feb. 10, 2025, 4:15 p.m.): One person has succumbed as a result of a serious motor vehicle crash on the Augusta Road (Route 17) in Washington, Feb. 9, 2025.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office is not yet releasing the name of the deceased, stating, “The second operator's identity will remain confidential until family members have been appropriately notified.”

KCSO has identified the other person involved in the 9:30 p.m. incident as Noah McGrath, 27, of Portland.

This investigation is ongoing, according to KCSO.

“We would like to acknowledge the collaboration of various agencies that assisted with the response, including the Maine State Police, Life Flight, Knox Regional Communications, Washington Fire, Union Rescue, and Waldoboro Emergency Medical Services,” said KCSO.

Crash reconstructionists called to Washington Sunday evening 

WASHINGTON — LifeFlight of Maine emergency medical helicopter flew to Pen Bay Medical Center Sunday evening, Feb. 9, 2025, in regards to one of two people involved in a two-vehicle crash in Washington. Both people involved in the crash suffered injuries, and both needed to be extricated from their respective vehicles. Due to the severity of the crash, a reconstruction team was called in.

Washington Fire Dept., Union Ambulance, and Knox County Sheriff's Office were made aware of the crash at approximately 9:35 p.m.  Until responders on scene could sort out the situation, which occurred just west of Fitch Road on Route 17, a second Union Ambulance rig responded, as did Waldoboro EMS. In the end, resources from all three rigs were put to use in some capacity or another. Union Fire Dept. offered to put a crew together if a second set of extrictation equipment was of use. However, WFD was all set with what they already had on hand. 

The initial plan for LifeFlight, which flew over from its Lewiston base, was to land in Washington at the Dept. of Transportation facility. However, medical personnel on the ground opted to start a transport to Pen Bay and meet the helicopter there.

Augusta Road (Route 17) was closed between West Washington Road and Vanner Road until approximately 12:25 a.m.

February 9, 2025 was the day of the Super Bowl.
