Alan Dana Sewall, obituary
SOUTH THOMASTON and JENSEN BEACH, Florida — With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Alan Dana Sewall, 83, on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. Born in Rockland, Maine, September 9, 1941, he was the 5th of 6 children born to Capt. Alden W. Sewall and Ruby Billings Sewall.
Raised on a small farm on the corner of Buttermilk Lane in Thomaston, he graduated from Thomaston High School in 1960 and MVTI (Maine Vocational Technical Institute in South Portland) in 1962 with a degree in Construction. In 1961 he married the love of his life, Marion Lousie Black just two weeks after she herself graduated high school.
After working for a time in the Portland area, they moved back to the Midcoast area in 1963. While just starting his own construction company he also worked as the Industrial Arts teacher in St. George. In 1966, he was drafted into the Army serving in the Vietnam War. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Purple Heart Award given to those wounded in battle.
Alan formed the construction company of Young & Sewall which later became A.D. Sewall, Inc. in Rockland. In later years he began developing residential and commercial properties. His love of building started at a young age, building his first 20 ft. wooden boat while still in high school. His love of the water led him to larger boats with which he made many trips between Maine and Florida. Alan also built his own acrobatic plane, a Pitts Special, teaching himself acrobatics. A man of many talents, he could rebuild or repair almost everything and his friends often called him MacGyver.
Alan held licenses as a commercial pilot, Maine Guide, and was a lifetime member of the Elks. His intrepid spirit and love of fishing, hunting and flying led him on many adventurous excursions.
Predeceased by his parents, Captain Alden and Ruby Billings Sewall; a sister, Carol O’Brien and her husband Charles; a brother, Alden Sewall, Jr. and his wife Marilyn; brother-in-law Victor Grindle; and sister-in-law Audrey Sewall; Alan is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marion Black Sewall; his son, Jason A.
