Victoria "Viki" Reed, obituary
WARREN — Victoria (Viki) Reed, 60, of Warren, passed on peacefully at home, with her family by her side Jan. 30 following a brief illness.
Viki was born in Bloomington, Indiana on March 20, 1964. The daughter of Gary Coan and Darlene Hale, Viki was raised by her mom and dad though, Thomas and Darlene Hale of Washington, Maine. She was educated in Indiana, Alaska and finally, Waldoboro, where she put her roots down first, followed by her home, Warren, Maine. Viki worked in local agriculture then clerical jobs but as a devoted wife and mother, her true work and passion was always her family first, her incredible gardens, where her daughters vowed (unsuccessfully) to never fall in love with the practice and feeding any soul who happened upon her kitchen. Her dilly beans and pecan rolls remain unmatched.
In 1990 Viki received the biggest blessing of her life, she met her soulmate, Steve, and for the past 35 years they have been absolutely inseparable; dancing, gardening and beach combing the years away.
Anyone who knew Viki is almost certain to have heard the name Alpha-1 antitryspen deficiency. Alpha is a genetic disorder that causes lung or liver disease due to a lack of the protein alpha-1 antitrypsen. Viki had the one effecting the lungs. The damage that the disease caused looked much like emphysema and resulted in a double lung transplant in 2002. This gift was something that she had to wait over 5 years for, but those years weren’t wasted on a thing. Viki always kept herself going with her goal making and generous spirit, she spent those years traveling and speaking for the Alpha-1 Foundation and the American Lung Association receiving The Helen Chase Walsh Memorial Award and the ALA’s Patient Advocacy Award amongst others. After her transplant, she adored her time volunteering at the Salvation Army and especially the St. Bernards Soup Kitchens. She met people through all of these organizations that helped support, inspire and uplift her. For that, her family is eternally grateful.
She also held a deeply private and close relationship with God. A practice that nurtured her faith in tomorrow and brought her deep comfort throughout some of the tougher times life sometimes brings.
Viki is predeceased by her daughter Jaime Lee; grandson Edward; dad, Tom Hale; father, Gary Coan; sister Valarie Hale; and nephew, Caleb Packard. As well as many friends and loved ones from the Alpha and transplant communities.
Her survivors include husband, Steve Ausplund of Warren; daughters Racheal Morris and spouse Garvin, and Chelsea Reed; grandchildren Noah and Adelaide Morris; mother, Darlene Hale; siblings Vanessa Betancourt and spouse Miguel of Bowdoinham, Emma Coan and spouse Thommi of Hamburg, Germany, Danny Hale and spouse Jyma of Ellisville, Indiana, and Ann Marie Heitler and spouse Chuck of Indianapolis, Indiana. Along with countless nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones whom she loved more than words can say.
Annually, Viki looked forward to one thing more than anything later on in life, the green grass!
A celebration of life party is being planned for late spring/early summer 2025 at her home in Warren.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks that donations be made in her name to the Sussman House in Rockport, 40 Anchor Drive, Rockport, ME 04856 or to The American Lung Association, National Direct Response, PO Box 756, Osceola, WI 54020-0756.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.
