Dr. Constanze Stelzenmüller, an expert on European security policy and strategy, will be a featured speaker at the 35th annual Camden Conference, Europe: Challenged at Home and Abroad, to be held February 25 – 27. 

According to the Conference, following last month's contentious talks in Geneva between E.U. and Russian leaders, Dr. Stelzenmüller wrote for the Financial Times that "Europe finds itself in a perfect storm of its own making. It faces a gas price and supply crisis that makes it vulnerable to political blackmail." Nord Stream 2, the controversial $10 billion undersea natural gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, has yet to win an operating license, and in January Dr. Stelzenmüller told NPR that Germany has included the pipeline as "part of the potential sanctions toolbox that will be put in place by the Western alliance if the Russians really attack Ukraine.”

At Brookings, Dr. Stelzenmüller is the inaugural holder of the Fritz Stern Chair on Germany and Transatlantic Relations in the Center on the United States and Europe; she was a speaker at the  2015 Camden Conference on Russia. She will join nine other world experts for the 2022 Camden Conference to address not only threats from Russia but also the rise of populism, shifting economic forces, the effects of climate change, the U.S–European relationship and other relevant topics.

The ten speakers will join Conference Moderator David Brancaccio, host of American Public Media's Marketplace Morning Report, live from wherever they are living or working around the globe as the Conference once again pivots to a virtual, live-streaming format due to the realities of the global COVID pandemic. The live-streaming format allows audience interaction (Q&A) with the speakers, in keeping with the Camden Conference mission of fostering informed discourse on world issues.

The annual Camden Conference is considered one of the top foreign affairs conferences in the United States and has attracted large audiences from Maine and over 25 other states. Participants include an informed public as well as high school and college educators and students.
