Special Olympics Maine Winter Games wrap up with a day of incredible competition and celebration
Special Olympics Maine successfully concluded its Winter Games in just one action-packed day on February 26, 2025, as organizers made the decision to adjust the schedule and complete all competitions in response to a potential weather-related cancellation for the following day. Despite the change, the event was a resounding success, with over 360 athletes showcasing their skills across multiple winter sports.
Athletes competed in Alpine Ski, Dual Ski, Speedskating, Snowshoe, and Cross-Country Ski, making the most of gorgeous weather conditions for outdoor events. The energy and enthusiasm of the athletes, coaches, and volunteers helped create an unforgettable day of competition, camaraderie, and achievement.
"We are so proud of how our athletes adapted to the schedule change and gave it their all on the slopes, the ice, and the trails today," said Ian Frank, President and CEO. "The weather was absolutely perfect for competition, and we are grateful to everyone who helped make this event so special."
To cap off the day, athletes, coaches, and supporters gathered for a celebratory dinner and dance at Edward Little High School, where they enjoyed a well-earned evening of fun, music, and community after their incredible performances.
In addition to the competition, the event featured over 100 Healthy Athletes screenings, ensuring that competitors had access to important health services and wellness resources.
