South School 4th Graders shine bright at Farnsworth Art Museum’s Share the Wonder event
The Farnsworth Art Museum’s annual Share the Wonder holiday event was made even more special this year as RSU 13’s South School 4th grade students and teachers were honored with the prestigious opportunity to light the museum’s holiday lights.
The 4th grade class’s nomination for this honor came in the form of a heartfelt letter from a South School parent, Katrina Saucier, which read:
“At South School, the 4th grade teachers and educators "Share the Wonder" with their community through Forest Fridays, where students spend every Friday afternoon exploring the school’s 45-acre, partially forested campus. This hands-on, experiential learning opportunity allows students to engage directly with nature, studying ecosystems, observing wildlife, and discovering the intricate mechanics of the natural world. For many students, it’s their first time experiencing a forest setting, sparking curiosity and fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment. The program enhances their understanding of nature and cultivates a sense of wonder that encourages lifelong learning. I’ve personally seen a noticeable change in my own daughter, thanks to the dedication of the teachers who bring these incredible experiences to life. Through Forest Fridays, South School is creating a lasting impact on students, igniting their curiosity and connection to the world around them.”
Forest Friday is a new educational initiative at South School this year where the 4th graders travel to the wooded area outside of the school to learn, explore and play. The outdoor learning environment is an important component of the curriculum, providing students with the opportunity to experiment and explore, ask questions and make observations, solve problems and build theories. The numerous benefits of time spent in nature for children are well-documented. Additionally, learning to understand and respect the natural world complements classroom studies of the Wabanaki. Students and teachers go out in all weather every Friday afternoon.
Under the twinkling lights of the Farnsworth’s festively adorned grounds, the students and teachers gathered to flip the ceremonial switch, illuminating the museum’s holiday display. The museum provided a hot chocolate station to warm hands and hearts, while free craft bags ensured the youngest attendees could take home a piece of the magic. The joy and pride on the faces of South School’s 4th graders and their teachers made the event unforgettable for all who attended.
“It was an honor to be recognized in this way,” said 4th grade teacher Zoë Foster. “Watching our students light up with excitement as they helped with the holiday display was a memorable moment for everyone.” Other South School teachers and staff implementing this new program include Natalie Burns, Jeanee Cwieka, Bethany Browne, and Brenda Thomas.
The Farnsworth Art Museum’s Share the Wonder event is a holiday tradition that brings the community together to celebrate art and light as well as the wonder of the holiday season. This year’s event was a standout occasion in the tradition of Share the Wonder.
