Searsport man arrested after police find stolen trailer, sheds on his property
SEARSPORT — A Searsport man was arrested Feb. 22, after members of the Maine State Police located a stolen camper, valued at $18,000, and several sheds on his property, according to a press release from Maine State Police.
Craig Thomas, 58, was arrested after Corporal Quintero and Trooper Maloon traveled to his property to interview him following investigation into the missing items. When they arrived at the residence, located on Skinner Pit Road, they found the Hampton Crossroads Trailer plainly visible, parked behind Thomas’ residence.
The trailer was reported stolen in 2024. Two stolen sheds, one valued at $8,000 and the other at $3,000 were also found on the property.
Thomas reportedly admitted to using the heavy equipment owned by his employer at Skinners Pit to steal the two sheds during a previous snowstorm, according to the release.
The owners of Skinners Pit are not implicated in the crime.
With regard to the trailer, Thomas reportedly stated that he moved the camper behind his home several months prior after seeing someone on the property and paying $1,600 to purchase it. When contacted by law enforcement, the person Thomas stated had sold them the trailer they reportedly stated they had never met or heard of Craig Thomas.
According to the report, Thomas was booked into Waldo County Jail based on outstanding warrants for home repair fraud. He was charged separately with three counts of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer.
At the time the trailer was stolen, it reportedly contained a mounted black bear, which has not been located. Corporal Quintero is asking anyone with information regarding the stolen mounted black bear to call him at 207-624-7076.
