Scott Hall, obituary
THOMASTON — Scott Hall, 70, passed away suddenly on November 25, 2024, at Maine Medical Center in Portland surrounded by his loving family. Scott was born to Richard and Ann Hall on September 12, 1954, in Rockland.
Scott grew up in Thomaston, graduating from Georges Valley High School in 1972. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts Education from the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham in 1976. He began his 25 year teaching career at Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln, Maine.
On June 24, 1978, Scott married Jolly Johnson, and they returned to Thomaston where Scott taught Industrial Arts at Georges Valley High School. Four years later, he moved to the newly built Thomaston Grammar School, where he began teaching in the modern facility he was fortunate to design for the middle level students. During these 25 teaching years, Scott coached basketball, softball, bowling, and soccer. He enjoyed several seasons of umpiring baseball and softball in schools in the mid coast area. He also spent many years at Thomaston Grammar School and Georges Valley basketball games running the clock. He loved that courtside view of the game.
In 2001, Scott retired from teaching and promptly started a new career as Director of Facilities and Transportation in SAD 50. Everyday brought a new challenge and he loved the camaraderie between all the people who worked tirelessly together to keep the well-oiled school system running. In 2020, Scott retired from what is now known as RSU 13.
Scott was a 44 year member of the Rockland Elks 1008. He dedicated several years to holding offices of the lodge and was honored to serve as their Exalted Ruler in 2010. He remained active as a PER until his death.
Scott was a gifted woodworker creating special pieces of furniture for his home, and gifts for family members. He loved hunting and fishing and always returned with a story. He took pride in the family property and spent many hours mowing the lawn and working in the gardens to maintain their “piece of the planet”. He also found peace and contentment at the family camp on Craig Pond in Orland.
Whether he was watching a beautiful sunset from the balcony, or slow-cruising around the pond on the pontoon boat, or listening to the loons while enjoying a campfire, he always felt that any day at camp was a good day.
Scott’s family, especially his sons and his grandchildren, were the joys of his life. He loved spending time with Erik and Jake and was ever so proud of the men they have become and the accomplishments in their lives. Becoming a grandfather melted his heart. There was nothing so sweet as the loving voice of a Grand coming to him and saying “Papa”.
He lived his life by the Lou Holtz quote: “Do right. Do your best. Treat others as you want to be treated.”
Scott was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Ann Hall; his grandmother Doris Hardy; his sister Pat Benner; and his father-in-law, Rupert Johnson.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 46 years, Jolly Johnson Hall; his sons, Erik and his fiancé Angela and her daughters Lauren and Kaitlyn, and Jake Hall and his wife Ashley; his grandchildren, Reid, Kade, Johanna and Eben.
He is also survived by his sisters Deborah Hall and her husband Clay Graybeal, Tess Hall and her husband Paul Panish; his mother-in-law, Rachel Johnson; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janie and David Bouchard; and many treasured extended family members.
