Phinehas Stewart Newton, V, obituary
Phinehas Stewart Newton, V, was born at the Bethesda Naval Hospital on April 1, 1956 to Lt. Phinehas Stewart and Frederica Leach Newton. Due to his father’s military career, Phin lived first in Falls Church, Virginia, then Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, then Coronado, California, followed by Taipei, Taiwan and finally Fairfax, Virginia. When his father retired in 1969, the family returned home to live in Rockport.
Phin graduated from Camden Rockport High School in 1975. He was the Chairman of the Maine Teenage Republicans from 1974 - 75. He graduated from Thomas College in ’79 with a business degree.
Following a stint at the Tradewinds Hotel in Rockland, Phin went to Florida and worked at the Spanish River Resort and Palm Beach Hilton. He must have missed Maine’s cold winters as he returned to Bangor and worked at various hotels as a night auditor.
In 1987 he married Lois Gamble Finnegan and had an instant family with her boys, Edwin and Michael.
Phin followed in his namesake father’s footsteps as he picked up the mantle of the family genealogy enthusiast. It was a keen interest that he and Lois shared and they made many connections with relatives across time, the country and the world.
Phin continued working 7 nights a week as a night auditor at both the Bangor Comfort Inn and the Bangor Inn and Suites until he was stricken with cancer. He passed away suddenly at home during the wee hours of Dec. 21. His parents predeceased him.
Phin is survived by his loving wife, Lois; his sisters Edwina Reisig of Beverly Hills, Florida and Wendelin Walsh of Fairfax, Virginia and Rockport; and his brother, Frederic Leach Newton (Anne) of Chesapeake, Virginia. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and one great niece.
Funeral arrangements will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to your favorite local animal shelter to honor Phin’s deep love of animals.
