“Numerous Structures" by Jon Merritt on display at Rockport library in March
ROCKPORT — “Numerous Structures,” a show of artwork by Jon Merritt, will be on display at the Rockport Public Library from March 4 through March 29, 2025. Merritt will give a presentation related to the exhibit on Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m., where he will present his thesis on the role of abstract art.
The exhibit will feature paintings from three different bodies of Merritt’s work, each fusing digital and material processes. Some of the works have been created using a CNC (computer numerical control) router cutting tool; others took form with a jig saw and scale drawings on graph paper.
With an array of templates and procedures, Merritt works to create diagrammatic structures “that register transformative, catalyzing, liberating, and quickening formations and effects to their beholders.” Merritt declares that, “Geometric art offers an odyssey with no end,” according to RPL, in a news release.
Jon Merritt lives and works in Rockport, Maine. He completed his MFA in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2015 and his BFA at the California Institute of the Arts in 2012. Merritt's numerous influences and interests include science fiction, modern and pre-modern art and design history, voxel-based video games, and post-structuralist philosophy. With refined skills in woodworking and computer-aided design, his current work is divided between populating ongoing painting series and realizing his vision in new media.
