Mack truck on edge after dump body tangles with phone wires
CAMDEN — A contractor descending a private driveway to intersect with Route 1 just north of Camden's downtown became entangled in phone lines Wednesday afternoon, which resulted in a compromising position for his large dump truck.
Camden Fire Department responded to the incident during the afternoon Feb. 5, arriving to find the driver had stopped the truck, engaged the emergency brake, and hopped out. But not before the truck's dump body, which had inadvertently been left up while the contractor was driving down the hill, ripped through electrical lines, down a power pole, and then became ensnared in phone lines.
Those phone lines, however, held fast to the power poles, creating enough tension to halt the dump truck body, lifting the truck like a ballerina en pointe, onto one set of tires, while the other side of the truck was pulled up and clear off the ground.
The contractor was working on the Maine Dept. of Transportation highway construction site further north on Route 1, at Springbrook Hill. The driveway where the driver got hung up leads to Laite Construction.
After Central Maine Power responded to ensure the power was off, a DOT crew was nearby to get the dump track back down on all wheels.
