Lucy (Bickford) Wadsworth, obituary
ROCKLAND — Lucy Laura (Bickford) Wadsworth left this world on Monday, December 9, 2024. She unfortunately battled Alzheimer’s for the last seven years of her life. Her family found it painfully hard to watch the special pieces of her fade away.
She was born on Vinalhaven, September 4, 1941. She lived the majority of her life on the island and it truly was the only place she wanted to be. Her love of the island was shown most in her constant smile and her helping hand for those she met on a daily basis. She was robbed of her hearing by Scarlett Fever as a small child and because her school years were difficult, she was not able to graduate. Through her perseverance she attended Central Beauty School at the age of 18 and became a hairdresser. She often told stories of the good times she had with her fellow students.
She met and married her first husband, David Roth, in her early twenties and had two daughters, Sheila and Kathy. Lucy and David lived in New Hampshire until their divorce when Lucy moved her girls back to the island. Back on Vinalhaven, she raised her two daughters, instilling her values of honesty, integrity and the power of a delicious home-cooked meal. Christmas came with an overflowing table of amazing home baked goods to be shared with many.
She married Ronald ‘Dexter’ Wadsworth and lived harmoniously until his death. He especially loved her homemade biscuits. She was artistic and grew the most beautiful tulip beds. She loved her harborside apartment that overlooked the harbor and enjoyed lending a helping hand to her elderly neighbors. Lucy was beautiful, inside and out, and lightened the day of those around her.
Lucy was predeceased by both her parents, Hilda and Maurice Bickford; and her three brothers, John Bickford, Maurice Bickford Jr., and Richard Bickford.
She is survived by her sister, Mary MacFee and her husband Bill of Friendship; her daughters, Sheila Roth-Silvestri and her husband Cullen of Thompson, Connecticut, and Kathy Roth of South Thomaston.
Lucy loved a funny prank and sharing a hug that melted your worries away. Those hugs were her superpower as anyone fortunate enough to receive one would know. Proof of that is in the words shared by all who knew her “I just loved Lucy.”
Graveside services will be held at Calderwood’s Neck cemetery in the spring.
She was a shining star and will be so missed.
