Let the Wild Winds Carry: A Classics symposium in Rockport, July 9






Do you want to learn more about the great influences of Greek mythology, the joys of the classics, and the heroes of Homer? You are invited to attend a Classics Symposium cosponsored by Rockport Public Library and Ex Libris, which will be held at the Rockport Opera House, Tuesday July 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. The morning will include libations and honey cake, in the classic tradition and courtesy of Nancy Harmon Jenkins, followed by a lineup of speakers that includes distinguished professors and journalists.
Presenters include:
• Polly Chatfield, of Rockport, who is a teacher, poet, writer, and winner of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship with her topic on Patterns of Simile in The Divine Comedy.
• HDS Greenway leads the Opinion and Analysis section for GlobalPost. He has been a journalist for 50 years and recently retired from the Boston Globe after a extraordinary career, most recently as its editorial page editor.
• Vincent Katz is a poet, translator, and critic. He is the author of 11 books of poetry, two books of translation, and his criticism has been published in numerous books, catalogues, and journals.
• Christine Kondoleon is the George and Margo Behrakis Senior Curator of Greek and Roman Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
• Madeline Miller, author of Song of Achilles, her first novel, was awarded the 2012 Orange Prize for Fiction and was a New York Times Bestseller; it has been translated into 23 languages world-wide.
• Michael Putnum is MacMillan Professor of Classics and Professor of Comparative Literature, emeritus, Brown University.
The symposium includes slides and videos of classical paintings and artifacts of ancient Greek and Roman times presented by curators Christine Kondoleon and Wynne Phelan. A book table will be supplied from Left Bank Books, including materials and books covering the classics, Symposium booklets, booklets and posters. Libations and honey cakes by Nancy Jenkins.
