John Henry Dolcater, Jr., obituary
ROCKLAND — John Henry Dolcater, Jr., died on December 30, 2024 at the Sussman House in Rockport. Born on November 14, 1930, he was the son of John Henry and Julia (Waters) Dolcater in Tampa, Florida.
Jan, as he was known, married June Unger from Mobile, Alabama on July 9, 1951 while they were students at the University of Alabama over seventy years ago.
They were blessed with two children, Catharine Gordon Dolcater Clarke (Paul) and John Henry Dolcater III and five grandchildren: Sarah Catharine Paulson and Elizabeth June Paulson Huser (Keith) and Daniel Daulton Dolcater, David Justin Dolcater, Jacob Logan Dolcater. Elizabeth gave them three great-grandchildren, Ethan Sloane and Hannah June Federman and Eleanor Rose Huser.
His wife, June, was blessed with several precious nieces and nephews: Ellie Jernigan Lastra, Catharine Jernigan Bodemann, John David Jernigan and T. Fonde Jernigan, Jr., David Unger Inge, Herndon Inge, and George Bulloch Inge.
Jan was a graduate of H.B. Plant High School in Tampa Florida and a graduate of the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Jan and his wife, June, moved to London, England where he received his orders to report for active duty while attending law school. Jan was stationed there for two years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force before returning to the states for discharge.
From London, they moved to Tampa, Florida where he was active in the building material business with his father. Jan was active in civic affairs and served on the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Tampa, prior to being elected President in 1967. Active in local politics, Jan served as precinct committee man for Beach Park and the surrounding area for the Republican Party.
They lived in Tampa until the fall of 1991, then moved to Florence, Alabama, where he was named as V.P. of Sales and Marketing for a manufacturer. His responsibilities were for the lower 48 states.
After three happy and successful years in Florence, they moved to their dream home area of Midcoast Maine and Jan went to work in sales for a former customer. He later served in sales for another distributor making sales calls throughout Maine and New Brunswick, Canada.
Living originally in Camden when they moved to Maine, a year later they moved to a restored cape in neighboring Rockport living there for over 23 years. While in Maine, Jan was very active at St. Thomas Episcopal Church serving as a lay assistant, lay reader, vestry member and representative of the Camden Area Food Pantry for over 7 years. Jan also participated with Meals on Wheels and was instrumental in development of the program, Help Heat Homes, raising funds for low-income participants for over five years. In addition, he was a member of Rockland Rotary Club.
Following his retirement, he was active in local politics, served as Town Chair and County Chair for the Knox County Republican Party. He later organized a writer’s group supplying articles for the local press as well as ten other newspapers in Maine.
During his retirement years Jan wrote several books, Closing the Sale and also, Peace Within Through God’s Way.
In July of 2019, June and Jan moved from Rockport to Bartlett Woods retirement community in Rockland, where she passed away on April 1, 2023.
A church service will be announced in the spring followed by burial in Seaview Cemetery in Rockport.
