Joan M. Winchenbach, obituary
ROCKLAND — Joan M. Winchenbach, formally of Warren, Maine, passed away peacefully on February 9, her 95th birthday.
Born in Wareham, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Arthur L. and Alma Rondelli Kenney. Joan met her husband, Clayton, while on a visit to Maine with his sister Lois. They married soon after meeting and shared 63 years of marriage until his death in 2020. The first two years of their marriage were spent living in their rustic camp on Lermond Pond which remains a special family gathering spot.
Joan considered herself primarily a homemaker but did many other things. She and Clayt purchased The Village Market in Warren in 1971 and she helped run the business for over 20 years. After retirement they opened an antique shop in the same building. She was also very involved in community: as head of the Payson Park Committee, a part of the Warren Historical Society, the Georges River Canal Association and the Warren Day Committee.
Joan and Clayt were a part of a close group of friends, the Kasserole Group, and enjoyed many dinners, card games, canoe trips and travel with them. Joan spent 10 years as area representative of the exchange student program ASSE and hosted 6 students over the years herself, as well as placing many more in area homes. She treasured her continued contact with the students through the years since. Joan loved her time quilting with the Tuesday Quilters, as well as sewing and knitting. She played Skip Bo every day and taught many others to play.
Joan is survived by her children, Deanna McCutcheon and husband Marc, Stephen Winchenbach and Suzanne Winchenbach and partner Alan Wancus; grandchildren Kara Serino and husband Ross, Matthew McCutcheon, Connor Winchenbach and fiancé Baylee Smith, Benjamin Winchenbach and Kyle Winchenbach; great-granddaughter Mira Serino; her brother, Thomas Kenney and his children Angela and Ronald; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Dana and Ruth Winchenbach, Lois Spooner, Morgan Winchenbach, Ronald Winchenbach and many nieces and nephews as well as Joan’s Lahey cousins.
The family is so grateful for the care and expertise provided by the Special Care Unit at Pen Bay Medical Center. She loved the staff and their outstanding care at Quarry Hill and more recently at Breakwater Commons.
