Dachshunds gather for annual Belfast Wienerfest

BELFAST — Belfast’s annual Wienerfest marked its 12th year Sunday, bringing hoards of dachshunds to the waterfront, along with eager owners. While the weather at this year’s Wienerfest was less cooperative than in years past, the constant rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of those in attendance, whether they sported four legs, or two.
Each September the Friends of Belfast Parks hosts Wienerfest, and each September visitors descend on the waterfront to enjoy it.
Wienerfest serves not only as a way to pay homage to the quirky canines, but also to raise funds for the development and maintenance of Belfast Dog Park.
After assembling at Steamboat Landing Park, almost all of the dachshunds in attendance participated in a parade, led by volunteers. Some dachshunds were outfitted with only a leash and and a toothy smile, while others were dressed to impress.
There was no shortage of creativity as dachshunds made their way around the event. Some were decked out in cowboy hats, while others elected fairy wings or athletic jerseys.
The ever-popular hot-dog costume was also spotted on several willing sausage-shaped participants.
The event also hosted Doxie Derby races, which were broken into two categories. The first category was for miniature dachshunds, the second for standard zied.
The costume contest provided an arena for 40 costumed canines to strut their stuff in front of the crowd. For more academically-minded dogs, there was a Clever Dog Trick Contest.
Wienerfest also provided earthdog demonstrations to anyone interested.
Earthdog tests are designed to allow owners of terriers and dachshunds a way to measure their dog’s hunting skills.
Dachshunds, which belong to the hound family, were developed in Germany over 300 years ago, according to the American Kennel Club. Developed to hunt badgers, their name literally translates into badger (dachs) dog (hund).
While the many contests and demonstrations provided entertainment to spectators, the star of the day remained the dachshunds in attendance.
For their proud owners, and many admirers who braved the weather, there were an assortment of refreshments available.
