Art opening for Searsmont's Emma Schurink, March 7
SEARSMONT — Friday, March 7, from 5 - 6 p.m., Searsmont Town Library will host an opening for local artist Emma Schurink, whose art will hang on the library walls in March and April.
Emma Schurink creates charcoal drawings of the natural world: alive, mysterious, organic, and meditative. Having grown up in the hustle and bustle of New York City, an environment that was over stimulating for her, she has sought out life among the trees. And trees have become her muse. She is also drawn to the intensity of charcoal because of its ability to emphasize visual contrast, whether it’s between light and shadow, rough and smooth, or negative and positive space. Drawing is a practice that deepens her awareness and understanding. When she draws, she observes, and when she observes she gets to know her subject, like she would a new friend. She sees what she wouldn’t typically see as she passes by.
Schurink minored in visual art at Kenyon College and resides in Searsmont, Maine. Her website is www.emmaschurinkart.com.
