Abused horse finds home for the holidays at Darrowby Farm sanctuary
JEFFERSON — Former broodmare Fiona has found a forever home at Darrowby Farm Sanctuary. Abused for 17 years before being rescued from an auction pen, Fiona will now receive the compassionate care she deserves for the rest of her life, according to a news release from Darrowby Farm.
When Josie McAllister first rescued Fiona, her stunning red coat was marred with deep scars, and she was skin and bones. She was anxious and cautious, but she had a desperate need for affection.
As Josie began to rehabilitate Fiona and made plans to find a home for her, she realized the horse would need a place where she would be understood, safe, and truly loved.
“I reached out to Amanda [Glenn, director at Darrowby Farm] a few years ago, and she was able to give her heart and soul to help me,” said Josie, who surrendered a steer to Darrowby in 2022 due to health challenges.
About Fiona, Josie said: “She’s going to live out the rest of her life with some really amazing people. She needed the softest landing possible, and I know she will get just that and then some.”
Thanks to the support of the Foxwynd Foundation, Darrowby Farm Sanctuary was recently able to provide Fiona with that safe place, just in time for the holiday season and the cold winter months ahead.
“Since we welcomed Fiona, she has lived in our pockets,” Glenn said. “She is both trusting and fearful; she clearly wants nothing more than to know for certain that she is safe and loved. And now she is, forever.”
"The Foxwynd Foundation, together with the Bentley family, is delighted to have supported Fiona in finding a safe and loving home at Darrowby Farm Sanctuary," said Foxwynd Foundation Executive Director Pamela Villagra, in the release. "It is a privilege to be part of stories like this, where lives once filled with challenges are transformed into lives filled with hope."
Fiona joins 70 animals, including other horses as well as pigs, goats, cows, ducks, and more, at the sanctuary. Many of these animals have similar backgrounds of abuse and neglect. At Darrowby, they are provided with nutrition, medical care, shelter, and– most importantly, love for the rest of their days.
While the Foxwynd Foundation has provided incredible support, more is needed to ensure each of Darrowby’s residents receives the compassionate care they deserve. Donations for Darrowby Farm can be made here.
